PROJECT: HENG TANG RIVER ECO – WETLAND
LOCATION: CHINA, JIANGSU PROVINCE, CHANGZHOU
CLIENT: CHANGZHOU LOCAL GOVERNMENT
Our design was the winning entry in a China wide national competition. The name ‘Eco-Wetland’ was somewhat of a misnomer, because the 10 kilometre long river frontage passes through some of the more quickly urbanising environments in Jiangsu; hence the pressure to enhance both the natural open space, and civic functions along its length.
Many riverside designs in China ‘ turn their back’ on the river – this design celebrates the wide river expanse, with a multitude of passive and active recreation uses fronting onto the river; and a program to improve the water quality, albeit currently at a reasonably good level.
